Day of Immunology—April 29, 2023
The International Day of Immunology, observed annually on April 29, is dedicated to increasing global awareness of the importance of immunology in the fight against infection, autoimmunity, and cancer. The theme for 2023 is “Immunology Talks to Public Health.”
To celebrate, AAI has launched a week-long education campaign focused on busting common myths about the human immune system—using examples that affect everyone, such as allergy, flu, natural immunity, and supplements.

Flu Vaccine
Did you know that side effects from the flu vaccine can mimic the flu but it’s not the actual flu? Being vaccinated against the flu will help prevent getting the flu or will lesson the symptoms if you do get it. For a full Q&A about flu shots to help you decide if you should get vaccinated against the flu, visit www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/general.htm.
Vitamin C
In honor of International Day of Immunology, we’re breaking down a popular myth around Vitamin C. Taking Vitamin C (even "mega-dosing") won't prevent or shorten a cold, but it IS important to get foods rich in Vitamin C to support your overall health and wellness! For a fact sheet about Vitamin C-rich foods, visit https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminC-Consumer/
Natural Immunity
Have you heard that natural immunity is better than immunity provided by a vaccine? This is actually false—trying to develop natural immunity from a disease can have lasting, damaging effects on your body, which can be avoided via vaccination.
