AAI-Dana Foundation Award in Human Immunology Research

The AAI, in partnership with the Dana Foundation, established this award in 2004 to recognize individuals who discover immune processes pertinent to human disease pathogenesis, prevention, and therapy. The recipient will receive a $5,000 cash award and travel support to attend the AAI Annual Meeting. In addition, the award provides support to one member of the awardee’s laboratory to attend the Annual Meeting. The awardee is required to present his or her work at an award lecture at the Annual Meeting.

AAI-BD Biosciences Investigator Award

Since 1993, the AAI has recognized an early-career investigator who has made outstanding contributions to the field of immunology. This award has been co-sponsored since 1998 by BD Biosciences. The award includes a plaque, a $3,000 cash award, and travel support to attend the AAI Annual Meeting. The awardee is required to present his or her work at an award lecture at the Annual Meeting.

AAI-Invitrogen Meritorious Career Award

Since 1999, the AAI has recognized a mid-career scientist for outstanding research contributions to the field of immunology.  Invitrogen undertook co-sponsorship in 2007. The recipient receives a $10,000 cash award and travel support to attend the AAI Annual Meeting. The awardee is required to present his or her work at an award lecture at the Annual Meeting.

AAI Excellence in Mentoring Award

The Excellence in Mentoring Award was established by the AAI in 1997 to recognize the importance of the mentor-trainee relationship. A dedicated mentor can significantly influence a trainee’s successful development and career. With this award, AAI honors a member for his or her contributions to the profession through outstanding mentoring.  The award is conferred annually during an awards ceremony at the AAI Annual Meeting.

AAI Public Service Award (PSA)

Since 1994, the annual AAI Public Service Award (PSA) has been bestowed on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advocacy and support of basic biomedical and immunologic research and who have distinguished themselves in such diverse fields as public affairs and policymaking, journalism and scientific writing, scientific research, research administration, minority recruitment and education in the sciences, and disease research advocacy.


Pfizer-Showell Travel Award

This award is intended to recognize the professional promise of an early career investigator (assistant professor or equivalent) and assist with travel to the AAI Annual Meeting for the purpose of presenting immunology research. The award was established in 1999 through an endowment from Henry J. Showell and Pfizer, Inc.  Award decisions are based on career progress and the submission of an outstanding abstract selected for presentation in a block symposium (oral presentation) at the Annual Meeting.  The award recipient must attend the annual AAI Business Meeting and Awards Presentation held during the Annual Meeting, where he/she will be recognized and presented with his/her award. Support of up to $1,500 will be provided for travel expenses.

AAI-Invitrogen Trainee Achievement Award

This award is intended to recognize promising trainees in the field of immunology. Awardees receive a $1,000 cash award and travel support (up to $1,500) to attend the AAI Annual Meeting. Trainee applicants will be selected on the basis of career promise and presentation of an outstanding first author abstract at the Annual Meeting. Award recipients must attend the annual AAI Business Meeting and Awards Presentation held during the Annual Meeting, where they will be recognized and presented with their awards. In 2007, Invitrogen undertook co-sponsorship of this award, which was established in 1997.

AAI Junior Faculty Travel Grant

This grant is intended to assist young investigators with travel to the AAI Annual Meeting. Grantees will be selected on the basis of career progress and the submission of a first-author abstract to the Annual Meeting. AAI members and nonmembers are eligible. Recipients will be presented a $500 cash award and a certificate during the Annual Meeting.

Cynthia Chambers Memorial-eBioscience Junior Faculty Award

To honor the memory of Dr. Cynthia Chambers, the AAI, together with eBioscience, Inc., established this award in 2005 to advance the careers of junior scientists who attend the AAI Annual Meeting for the purpose of presenting immunology research, specifically in the area of cancer biology. The award recipient must attend the annual AAI Business Meeting and Awards Presentation where he/she will be recognized and presented with his/her $1,000 award. Selection is based on the submission of an original first-author abstract for presentation (oral or poster) at the Annual Meeting.

AAI Minority Scientist Travel Award

Supported in part by a FASEB grant from the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program administered by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), NIH, this award provides travel support to eligible AAI members to attend the AAI Annual Meeting. Two types of awards are available (see application instructions, linked below), providing support of up to $1,550 for registration and meeting-related travel expenses. Award recipients must attend the annual AAI Business Meeting and Awards Presentation, where they will be recognized and presented with their awards.

   NEW for 2008!  AAI Trainee Abstract Award

Established in conjunction with the 2008 AAI Annual Meeting, this award provides a cash prize of $500 to AAI Trainee Members (students and postdoctoral fellows) whose first-author abstract submitted to the AAI Annual Meeting is selected for oral presentation in an AAI Block Symposium. To be eligible, the first author must: be an AAI Trainee Member in good standing as of the AAI Annual Meeting's regular abstract submission deadline; submit a first-author abstract by the deadline (note: late-breaking abstracts are not eligible for award consideration); attend the AAI Annual Meeting; and make the oral abstract presentation.
