Frederick G. Novy, Sc.D., M.D.
Brief Bio
Frederick George Novy (1864–1957) was the eleventh president of the American Association of Immunologists, serving from 1924 to 1925. He was a faculty member and administrator at the University of Michigan for more than 40 years.
Novy received his Sc.D. in physiological chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1890 and his M.D. from the medical school there the following year. While in graduate school, he conducted research in Robert Koch’s laboratory at the Hygienic Institute in Berlin (1888) and began his teaching career at the University of Michigan, first as an assistant in organic chemistry (1886–1887) and later as an instructor in hygiene and physiological chemistry (1887–1891). Upon completion of his M.D. in 1891, Novy joined the faculty of the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Michigan as assistant professor. Twice during the 1890s, he was a visiting researcher in European laboratories, first at the Pathological Institute in Prague (1894) and later at the Pasteur Institute in Paris (1897). In 1902, Novy was appointed professor and chair of the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Michigan. While serving as head of the bacteriology department, he held several concurrent administrative appointments at the medical school, including director of the Laboratory of Hygiene (1909–1935), chair of the Executive Committee (1930–1933), and dean (1933–1935). Novy retired in 1935 as emeritus professor and dean.
