The Ph.D. program in Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University
is designed to help students develop into highly qualified research
scientists. The faculty is strongly committed to training independent
researchers who will make ongoing contributions to the biological sciences
throughout their careers in academia, government or industry. A low
student-to-faculty ratio ensures that each student receives individual
attention and advising; a unique program of research and coursework is
specifically designed to address personal needs and goals. Additionally,
students have the frequent opportunity to attend both organism- and
technique-based regional group meetings, journal clubs, special topic
workshops and seminars by leading scientists. The Department of Biological
Sciences offers a program leading to the Master of Science in
Computational Biology for promising students who plan careers in this
exciting new area. Most applicants admitted to the program have earned an
undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, computer
science, or mathematics. Carnegie Mellon University has an active research
community in computational biology and a strong tradition of
interdisciplinary research in the Department of Biological Sciences, which
fosters an environment rich in interactions and collaborations. Students
are welcomed in laboratories and facilities throughout both the department
and the larger local scientific community. This open and cooperative
atmosphere offers exposure to state-of-the-art techniques, access to
specialized equipment, and the opportunity to attend both organism- and
technique-based regional group meetings, journal clubs, special topic
workshops, and seminars by leading scientists.

Mucosal Immunology -- Our current research focus is determining
the role of coagulation in immunity. We hypothesize that the
identification of the mechanisms regulating fibrin deposition during
infection will provide new targets for both the prevention of
dissemination and abscess formation during staphylococcal infections.
Furthermore, the study of fibrin deposition during infection of the
mammary gland may provide new insight into controlling pathogens at the
acute stage of infection thereby preventing the establishment of chronic
infection. The candidate will participate in ongoing projects focused on
the role of coagulation in immunity. One Ph.D. student position is
available. Candidates should have M.Sc. in a related field with GPA above
3.5. Publications in peer-reviewed journals are an asset.

The Department of Immunology at the University of Washington offers a
graduate program leading to a Ph.D. By promoting rigorous standards of
scholarship and encouraging the development of critical thinking and
analysis, students are prepared for careers as independent researchers and
teachers in academic settings, research institutions, or private industry.
Students can expect to complete the degree in approximately five and a
half (5.5) years, and are supported by the department with a living
expenses stipend, benefits package and paid tuition for the duration of
their tenure in the program.
