AAI Committee on the Status of Women:
A
ctivities & Symposia

The AAI Committee on the Status of Women sponsored the "Managing Your Lab Workshop" at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Boston, MA.  The session was chaired by Laura Haynes, Trudeau Institute.  The participants were:

Suzanne Pfeffer, Stanford University School of Medicine
Jeremy M. Boss, Emory University School of Medicine
Paula Kavathas, Yale University School of Medicine
Vijay Kuchroo, Harvard Medical School

The goal of this workshop was to provide new PIs information on management strategies necessary for running a laboratory.  A question and answer session was preceded by short presentations by the participants.  The topics addressed include: Getting the best from your staff; How to best mentor your staff; and How to negotiate with your superiors.  Although these topics are important for a new PI, there is no training in graduate school for how to address them or where to obtain assistance in learning how to manage your laboratory.

A commentary co-authored by Dr. Haynes, entitled "Lab management: insights for the new investigator," appears in the September 2006 issue of Nature Immunology.  To access the article, visit:
