Jeremy M. Boss
Appointed Next
Editor-in-Chief of
 The Journal of
Immunology

The AAI Council is pleased to announce
the appointment of Jeremy M. Boss, Ph.D., as the next Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Immunology (The JI).

Dr. Boss, an AAI member since 1994, is Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Emory University School of Medicine, and Director, Emory University Graduate Program in Genetics and Molecular Biology.  He joined Emory’s faculty in 1986.

Dr. Boss has served as a Deputy Editor for The JI since 2003, and served previously as an Associate Editor and reviewer.  In addition to his service on The JI editorial board, Dr. Boss is also a past invited symposia speaker and presenter in scientific writing and mentoring workshops at AAI annual meetings.

Dr. Boss holds B.S. and M.S. (Biology) degrees from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany and received his Ph.D. (Biology) from the same institution, where he focused on yeast genetics and molecular biology under his mentor, Dr. Richard S. Zitomer.  He later served as a postdoctoral fellow in molecular biology and immunology at Harvard University, where he was in the laboratory of Dr. Jack L. Strominger.  His honors include Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award (1982); Damon Runyon Cancer Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship (1983); and NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (1983-1986).

Dr. Boss’s research has focused in part on molecular mechanisms of regulation of immune system genes; regulation of human major histocompatibility complex class II genes; regulation of genes by tumor necrosis factor (MCP-1, MnSOD); regulation of genes by MTA3 and BCL-6; and more recently regulation of PD-1 and its relationship to T cell exhaustion and disease.

In addition to leading active research and training programs, Dr. Boss is the author of a popular book on careers in biomedical research, and is a sought-after speaker for his informational and entertaining lectures on career issues.  Dr. Boss’s articles on publishing tips, career decisions, and time management are frequently featured in Science’s NextWave.  When not in the lab or lecturing, Dr. Boss is a competitive tennis player, musician, and skilled woodworker.

Dr. Boss joined a field of excellent applicants who responded to the recruitment effort launched by AAI in late 2006 and continued through June 2007.   In October, final candidates were interviewed by the AAI Publications Committee, which recommended Boss’s appointment as Editor-in-Chief to the AAI Council. In accepting the position, Dr. Boss offered these comments:

“I am honored to accept the position as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Immunology.  Over the past 5 years the journal has seen some remarkable changes as it has evolved into a fully electronic publication, implementing electronic submission and review, and establishing an electronic archive.  Under the direction of current Editor-in-Chief Robert R. Rich, Letters to the Editor, In This Issue, Brief Reviews, and Pillars of Immunology sections were established.  These changes have led the way towards the distribution of immunological science in multi-media formats.  In assuming the position of Editor-in-Chief, I hope to continue the transition of the journal to modern media such that it attracts readers of all career stages within the discipline. For example, one idea I would like to implement is to bring podcasts – or “immunocasts” – to the journal.  Such media changes will bring the journal to different places in our lives and make it easier to keep up with the field.  The JI has been the home of many of my group’s publications, as it has been for most immunologists.  I believe that The JI is the workhorse of our field and must maintain its standard of excellence and high citation rate while representing the entire field of immunology.”

Dr. Boss will formally take the reins from current Editor-in-Chief Robert R. Rich, M.D., on July 1, 2008, for a term extending through June 30, 2013.  In keeping with past practice, an overlap period will be observed from January to June 2008, during which Drs. Rich and Boss will work closely to ensure an effective and orderly transition.

Founded in 1916, The JI is one of the most cited publications in biomedicine.  Its past and present Editors-in-Chief include:

Arthur F.  Coca & John C. Torrey (1920-1935)
Arthur F. Coca (1935-1948)
Geoffrey Edsall (1948-1954)
John Y. Sugg (1954-1968)
Harry M. Rose (1968-1971)
Joseph D. Feldman (1971-1987)
Ethan M. Shevach (1987-1992)
Peter E. Lipsky (1992-1997)
Frank W. Fitch (1997-2003)
Robert R. Rich (2003-2008)

Members of the AAI Council, Publications Committee, and Bethesda staff congratulate Dr. Boss and look forward to working with him.
