Membership Categories

Active Membership is available to those worldwide who have a strong interest in and have made a substantial contribution to the field of immunology. To be eligible a candidate must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in immunology or a related discipline and be an author on one publication on an immunological topic. Emeritus Membership is open to Active members who have retired due to age or disability. For details and application procedures, click here.

Honorary Membership is reserved for those who have shown exceptional achievement in the field of immunology and who reside outside the U.S. They are selected by the AAI Council. Click here for the names of Honorary Members.

Trainee Membership is open to graduate students and post-doctoral trainees who are enrolled in educational or training programs that could lead to a career in research in immunology or related fields. For details and application procedures, click here.

Active (Regular) Membership

Qualifications

To become an Active (Regular) member of AAI, an applicant must apply for admission and be approved by the AAI Membership Committee and the Council. Applicants must:

  1. possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., D.Sc.) in immunology or related disciplines, or an M.D. (or equivalent medical degree, e.g., D.D.S.),* and
  2. be an author on one publication on an immunological topic in a reputable English-language, peer-reviewed journal. Manuscripts in press are acceptable when accompanied by a letter from the publisher or Editor-in-Chief of the journal affirming its acceptance and imminent publication. Abstracts and unpublished papers will not be considered in evaluating whether a candidate meets the publication requirement for membership.

* These requirements may be waived under exceptional circumstances if a candidate shows evidence of other appropriate training and/or substantial research accomplishment.

Cost

Annual membership dues based on the calendar year are $260 for U.S. and non-Canadian residents and $266.25 for Canadian residents. For all non-U.S. residents, an additional $130 is required for airmail delivery if a print copy of The Journal of Immunology is requested.

Application Procedures

To apply for Regular membership (as an existing AAI Trainee member, past member, or past AAI event attendee):

  1. go to the secure AAI Login page and log in (if you forgot your User ID or Password, click the link under the Login box to request them). Once logged in, click on Regular Member Application under Non-Member Services.
  2. complete the required information on the online application (please help us understand our membership and serve you better by also completing the optional information).

To apply for Regular membership (new to AAI):

  1. go to the secure AAI Login page, click on "Join Now (Regular New Member Application)" in the upper left (you may also access the AAI Login page by going to the AAI Home page (www.aai.org) and clicking on "Renew Membership" listed under "Member Services" in the right column), and
  2. complete the required information on the online application (please help us understand our membership and serve you better by also completing the optional information).

    3. On the application, you will be asked to submit:

  3. the name of an active AAI member who will be your sponsor. If you do not have a sponsor, you can enter in the code: 217923 (also provided on the application form),
  4. payment for the current membership year (either full or part year to December 31), and
  5. a copy of your current Curriculum Vitae (CV) or biosketch including a short bibliography (limited to five pages), as an attachment in PDF format. (Please put at the top of your CV a) your advanced degree and b) the article on which you base your application; alternatively you may highlight these two requirements in yellow).

Your application will be reviewed by the Membership Committee once we have received both your CV and your membership dues payment. Reviews take place approximately every 2-3 weeks. After review of your application, you will be notified by email. If your application for membership is not approved, your dues payment will be refunded in full.


Emeritus Membership

Qualifications

To become an Emeritus member, an applicant must 1) be 66 years of age on the date of application for transfer to Emeritus, 2) have been an Active (Regular) member of AAI for the immediately preceding five years, and 3) be fully retired. An AAI Active (Regular) member who becomes disabled and is fully retired may apply for Emeritus status regardless of age.

Cost

There is no cost to maintain your membership and voting privileges. AAI welcomes any donation you might wish to make to the association to further its programs. If you wish to receive a subscription to The Journal of Immunology, the cost is $125 for U.S. residents, $255 for non-U.S. and non-Canadian residents, and $261.25 for Canadian residents which includes $130 for airmail delivery outside the U.S.

Trainee Membership

Qualifications

To become a Trainee member of AAI, an applicant must be a graduate student or a post-doctoral trainee enrolled in an education or training program that could lead to a career in research in immunology or a related field. Applicants for this membership category must submit at the time of application and annually thereafter a Trainee Certification Form signed by an Active AAI member certifying the applicant's trainee status. Individuals are eligible for Trainee Membership for a maximum of eight years provided they meet the trainee qualifications.

Cost

Annual membership dues based on the calendar year are $64 for U.S. and non-Canadian residents and $65.55 for Canadian residents. For all non-U.S. residents an additional $130 is required for airmail delivery of a copy of The Journal of Immunology.

Application Procedures

To apply for Trainee membership:

  1. download the Trainee Certification Form, have it signed, and create a PDF of the signed form,
  2. ...if you have been an AAI member or have attended an AAI event in the past —

    go to the secure AAI Login Page and log in (if you forgot your User ID or Password, click the link under the Login box to request them). Once logged in, click on Trainee Member Application under Non-Member Services.

    ...if you are new to AAI —

    go to the secure AAI Login page, click on "Join Now (Trainee Member)" in the upper left (you may also access the AAI Login page by going to the AAI homepage and clicking on "Renew Membership" in the right column),
  3. complete and submit the required information on the online application (please help us understand our membership and serve you better by also completing the optional information), and
  4. complete your submission by uploading your signed Trainee Certification Form and paying online with a credit card or following the instructions for payment by check.

After submitting the application to the AAI Membership Department online, your status will be pending until you upload the signed Trainee Certification Form in PDF format and, if paying by check, AAI receives your check.

Trainee membership dues are non-refundable except in the case where a current trainee is accepted for regular membership and pays regular dues for the same year. In that case, the full trainee dues paid will be refunded.
