AAI Minority Scientist Travel Award

This program provides registration and travel support for attendance at the AAI Annual Meeting to eligible trainees and/or junior faculty members. This award is funded by a grant to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health [FASEB MARC Program: T36-GM08059-29].

Eligibility:

This award provides funding for underrepresented minority trainees or underrepresented minority junior faculty members to attend the AAI Annual Meeting. Qualified minority groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, as determined by the NIGMS include: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Hispanic Americans, Latinos, Native Americans (specify tribal affiliation), and Natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands (Hawaii, Guam and American Samoa).

Also, applicants must be:

  • AAI Regular or Trainee members paid through the end of 2012.
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents (with valid green card) of the United States or its territories.
  • Giving an oral or poster presentation at IMMUNOLOGY 2012™.
  • An undergraduate/graduate student, Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. postdoctoral fellow, or Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. junior faculty (non-tenured assistant professors or equivalent).

NOTE: NIGMS guidelines determine that the trainee applicants must have or be pursuing a Ph.D. or Ph.D. combined degree. Other doctoral degrees do not meet the eligibility requirements. Consideration will be given to applications from members who are pursuing or who have an M.D. degree only if it is clearly documented that the applicants are engaged in basic/bench research.

Exceptions:

  • Federal employees or fellows/trainees at federal facilities are ineligible to apply.
  • Trainees supported by federal grants that include travel to meetings are also ineligible.**
  • If MARC awardees receive other AAI travel support for this meeting, the amount of MARC funding will be reduced commensurately.

**NOTE: We are not able to provide travel funds to any applicant who is directly supported by federal funds that include travel to meetings. Applicants who are supported by NIH T32 training grants, NIH F-series, NIH K-series, or applicants who have similar support from other federal agencies (e.g., NSF, etc.) are not eligible to apply. Graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows who are supported through their mentor's NIH R01 grant or similar grant from other federal agencies may receive travel funds. All sources of federal funding must be disclosed with the application packet.

Award:

Supported through a grant to the FASEB Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, this award provides travel support to eligible AAI members to attend the AAI annual meeting.
