Dan H. Campbell, Ph.D.

Dan H. Campbell

 Brief Bio

Dan Hampton Campbell (1907–1974) was the fifty-sixth president of the American Association of Immunologists, serving from 1972 to 1973. For over 30 years, Campbell headed immunochemistry research at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Campbell earned his M.S. in zoology from Washington University in St. Louis in 1932 before receiving his Ph.D. in microbiology at the University of Chicago in 1935. He remained at the University of Chicago for another seven years as a Logan Research Fellow in Immunology (1935–1937), instructor in immunology (1937–1939), and assistant professor of immunology (1939–1942) before joining the faculty at Caltech. His 1942 appointment as an assistant professor of immunochemistry at Caltech may well have been the first professorship in immunochemistry established anywhere. He became associate professor in 1945 and full professor in 1950. Despite suffering a near-fatal stroke in 1970, Campbell remained active at Caltech and in AAI until his death from a heart attack at the age of 67 on September 16, 1974.
